The top of the post base straddles the wood support post and provides nail holes which should be filled to add strength to the connection.

The drawing at the bottom requires a new steel reinforced concrete foundation. Post and column bases secure the bottom of posts or columns to concrete and are perfect for decks or patio covers. In this connection the bottom of the post has a 3 4 stub tenon that is routed into a plywood sub floor. I never use lag bolts. The blue box shows the post to block connection. The arrows point at the hardware and bolts connecting the post to the concrete lock.

Log hog screws are used to hold the post to the solid blocking below. Models are available for attaching to existing hardened concrete wet concrete as well as wood. To concrete connection do not behave like the wood post or the concrete pier they connect. The image to the right from a different engineer shows the exact same thing.

The bcs allows for the post to beam connection of 2 2xs to a 4x post or 3 2xs to a 6x post. Post base on a plywood deck. Post bases have an elevated bottom compartment with an opening that is designed to lock into a concrete anchor which is embedded in the top of the concrete pier. I then use through bolts that pass through the beam and this post extension to complete the connection.
